Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic and fuctional procedure that removes excess skin. muscle and fat from the eyelids.

Over time, the skin around the eyes begin to sag due to ageing, genetics, or lifestyle factors. As a result, droopy upper eyelids and puffy under eye bags can develop, often making individuals look tired or older than they are.

Blepharoplasty refreshes the eye area, creating a more alert and youthful appearance.

In some cases, the procedure also improves peripheral vision by lifting sagging skin that obstructs sight.

What happens during a Blepharoplasty procedure?

Blepharoplasty surgery is typically performed under local anesthetic. The procedure can target the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

For the upper eyelids, a small incision is made along the natural crease. Excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle, are removed or repositioned.

In lower eyelid surgery, the incision is placed either just below the lash line or inside the lower lid to minimise scarring.

Once the adjustments have been made, the incisions are closed with sutures. The goal is to enhance the contour of the eyelid while maintaining a balanced appearance.

Recovery and Results / Expectations of Blepharoplasty

Recovery from eyelid surgery is typically quick. Most patients return to normal activities within 7 to 10 days.

Swelling and bruising are common side effects, but these can fade steadily with rest and proper care.

Results begin to show within a couple of weeks and continue to improve as healing progresses. Patients usually notice more defined eyes and a smoother eyelid contour. If sagging skin was blocking vision, that issues often improves immediately after the surgery.

The results of a blepharoplasty are long lasting and have been known to significantly boost self confidence.

Blepharoplasty Complications

While 95% of cases are complication free, there is a small risk of:

  • Bruising or prolonged swelling
  • Infection or bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Deformity

These risks will be discussed with you during the consultation.

Blepharoplasty Aftercare

Sutures are generally removed after 7 days.

Aftercare instructions will be provided at the time of surgery to ensure optimal healing.

By following your surgeon’s guidance closely, you can expect a faster recovery and long lasting, natural looking results.
