What is Areola Reduction Surgery?

Areola reduction surgery reshapes and reduces the size of the areolas, the pigmented skin around the nipples. Many people feel uncomfortable with areolas the appear too large, stretched, or asymmetrical.

This straightforward surgery creates a more balanced look, helping patients feel more comfortable in their bodies.

How does the treatment work?

The procedure is performed under the local anaesthetic. Your surgeon, Dr Braham, will first mark the desired size of your new areolas. Once you are numb from the anaesthetic, he will make a circular incision around the edge of each areola to remove a ring of excess pigmented tissue.

What to expect after treatment:

Recovery is generally quick. Most patients return to light daily activities after a few days, though it’s important to avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise for at least 1 to 2 weeks.

During the first week, you may notice some swelling, bruising or mild discomfort. These symptoms usually fade within 1 to 2 weeks. As healing progresses, your final results become more visible, usually within a few weeks. Scars tend to fade over time, blending into the natural colour transition between the areola and the surrounding skin.

After the procedure, patients are advised to wear a bra day and night for 3 weeks to help aid healing.

When to expect results:

Mild to moderate pain, swelling, tenderness, and bruising are common for up to three weeks. These are temporary and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief. Dressings or surgical tape may be used to protect the incision. Keep them clean and dry, and follow all post-op instructions to prevent infection and aid healing.

Rest is crucial in the early recovery period. Limit activity for 5–7 days and avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or sleeping on your stomach for at least six weeks.

Showering is usually safe after 24–48 hours, but avoid soaking in baths, pools, or hot tubs until the wound fully heals to prevent complications.

Attend all follow-ups to monitor healing, remove non-dissolvable stitches if needed, and track progress toward final results.

Use silicone gels or creams as recommended, and protect the area from sun for at least six months to minimise scarring and discolouration.
