What is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is a skin condition characterised by the thickening and enlargement of the nose, often as a result from rosacea. It causes the nasal skin to become bumpy, red and swollen due to the excess tissue and enlarged sebaceous (oil) glands. While rhinophyma is benign, it can affect self confindence, and in some cases, impair nasal function. Treatment is often used for both cosmetic and medical reasons.

How does the treatment work?

Dr Braham’s preferred method is a surgical approach called ‘Shave and Cauterisation’. The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, and Dr Braham will remove the excess, abnormal skin tissue from the nose, to sculpt and restore a more natural contour. The area is cauterised and covered with a dressing. The goal is to reduce the excess tissue while preserving healthy skin and minimising scarring.

What to expect after treatment:

Most patients experience swelling, redness and mild discomfort for the first few days after treatment. The initial wound will be moist during the first week. The scab will fall off , revealing a smoother appearance. The nose may remain pink for up to 4 months.

 

 

When to expect results:

Full recovery can take several months as swelling fully resolves and skin texture improves. While perfect symmetry isn’t guaranteed, the nose will appear significantly more refined, and nasal airflow may also improve.
