Thread Vein Treatment Bexley, Swanley | Persona Cosmetic Medicine

Sclerotherapy & Thermolysis treatment for thread veins, blood spots and broken blood vessels.

Sclerotherapy and Thermolysis are two clinically proven, highly effective treatment options. Similarly can be used for getting rid of unsightly spider veins, thread veins, blood spots and broken capillaries.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a well established treatment used by medical practitioners for many years. Meanwhile it is still one of the most successful treatments. Predominantly for visible vein related concerns on the legs and body. A prescribed ‘sclerosing’ agent is injected into the dilated veins. Therefore causing the internal lining of these vessels to become irritated and inflamed. Resulting in them breaking down and dissolving away. However as there are many other healthy vessels supplying blood to the surrounding skin, removing the non functioning veins is safe.

What is Thermolysis?

Thermolysis, also known as short wave diathermy. Using a high frequency electrical current, it diminishes thread veins and broken blood vessels. However this treatment is predominantly used on the face.  It is gently inserted into the vessel using a hair thin probe. Electrical current is then passed through it. This coagulates the blood supply. Consequently weakening and destroying the vessel wall. In short, it will then be absorbed by the body. The effects are immediate and permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Sclerotherapy & Thermolysis at Persona

  • What is Sclerotherapy and how does it work?
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate thread veins and spider veins on the legs and body. It involves an injection of a solution called sclerovein directly into the vein, this irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and dissolve away.
  • What is Thermolysis and how does it work?
Thermolysis is the use of an electrical current passed directly into a vein or blood vessel. The current causes water molecules around the treatment area to vibrate resulting in production of heat which stops the blood supply which destroys the vessel wall and absorbed by the body.
  • What can Sclerotherapy and Thermolysis treat?
These procedures are used to treat the following concerns on both the face and body:
    • Broken capillaries
    • Spider veins
    • Blood spots
    • Facial blemishes
    • Facial thread veins
    • Leg thread veins
  • How soon will I see results?
Tiny veins and blood spots on the face treated with Thermolysis can disappear instantly. Veins and broken blood vessels on the legs and body treated with Sclerotherapy can take up to 4 weeks with more than one session needed if the veins are quite stubborn.
  • How long do the results last?
Results are permanent as once the vessel wall has been destroyed the vein disappears. However, when treating these conditions we are only treating the visible effects rather than the cause of the problem, therefore thread veins, blood spots, and broken capillaries may reappear in similar areas due to lifestyle or hereditary reasons.
  • Are Sclerotherapy and Thermolysis safe?
Both treatments are extremely safe when administered by trained and experienced medical professionals. Side effects from either procedure are temporary and minor.
Directly after Sclerotherapy you may see mild redness and puffiness in the treated areas and the veins can appear raised and darker. This is quite a natural and normal response to the irritant solution and will gradually fade over the following weeks. Aching in the treated area can also occasionally occur for the first few days but can usually be relieved by gently walking or simple pain-relief.
Directly after Thermolysis you may see mild redness on the treated areas which will subside within a few hours. Sometimes tiny scabs may appear from the dry blood from the treated vessel.
  • How should I care for my skin after?
Following our aftercare steps will help maximise the effects from either treatment.
    Sclerotherapy:
    • Maintain normal activities including walking for at least 10 minutes as often as possible as this works the muscles in the legs and aids circulation in the treated area. Gentle walking helps to reduce pressure in the superficial veins.
    • Gentle massage using stroking movements towards the heart aids the circulation, relieves aching in the legs and aids the healing process.
    • Avoid standing for prolonged periods for approximately 14 days after treatment.
    • Always avoid sitting cross legged or sitting with legs under buttocks as this interfaces with circulation of blood
    • Avoid very hot baths and saunas immediately pre and post treatment
    • Avoid sun beds and sunbathing immediately pre and post treatment
    • Avoid applying fake tan or perfumed products to the treated area for 3 days
    • Avoid strenuous physical activity, steps, aerobic and weight lifting exercise for approx 72 hrs after treatment
    • Avoid alcohol and aspirin for 24hrs pre and post treatment

    Thermolysis:
    • Do not rub the treated area(s) hard for 24 hours post-treatment
    • Normal skincare / make up routines can be performed without excess pressure.
    • Avoid sunbeds and direct exposure to sunlight for 48 hours.
    • No heat treatments, ie hot baths, saunas etc for 48 hrs.
