Mole Removal

A Mole, or naevus, is a normal skin growth that develops when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) grow in groups. Moles can appear in a range of different colours, shapes and sizes.

Moles, or naevi, are common skin growthsmade up of pigment producing cells. They often appear as flat or raised spots and vary in colour. They can appear as light brown to nearly black. Moles can form anywhere on the body and may change slowly over time.

The choice to remove a mole can be for a variety of reasons. Some people dislike their appearance , while others find them irritating due to clothes rubbing against them. In some cases, professionals recommend removal for diagnostic or preventative purposes.

How do we remove Moles at Persona?

We offer two highly effective options for mole removal: skin shave and surgical excision. Each serves a different purpose and suits specific types of moles.

  • Skin shave involves gently shaving the mole flush against the skin’s surface with a sterile blade. This technique is ideal for raised, non-suspicious moles. This method often leaves minimal scarring.
  • Surgical excision is used for deeper or suspicious moles that may require examination. With this method, our team remove the whole mole, including a small margin of surrounding tissue, to ensure complete removal and allow for testing if needed.
How does the treatment work?

We start by cleaning the area and administering local anesthetic, the medics then proceed with the relevant method of removal, depending on your treatment plan:

  • In a skin shave, we carefully remove the raised mole using a surgical blade. Then we smooth the surface to blend with any surrounding skin.
  • For a surgical excision, we will create a small yet precise incision around and beneath the mole. After removal, stitches may be used to aid the healing process and minimise scarring. If non-dissolvable stitches are used, you will be required to come back into the clinic 7-10 days post procedure to have them removed.
What to expect after treatment:

Mild redness and tenderness at the removal sight may last for a short while, but should begin to fade within a few weeks. As your healing progresses, your skin will continue to smooth out and any scarring should start to fade to match your natural skin tone.

When to expect results:

Healing will begin immediately after the treatment. With a skin shave removal, the area can form a scab that falls off naturally within 7-10 days; We recommend not picking at any scabs to avoid any scarring.

For surgical excisions, the recovery period may last 10-14 days, depending on the size of the excision and whether stitches are required.

If we send your mole for testing, you will recieve a follow up from us when we obtain your results. This is usually within 1-2 weeks.

To help with healing, we recommend avoiding exposure to the sun on the treated area, and to follow the aftercare we provide post procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Mole Removal Bexleyheath at Persona

  • Will I need stitches?
If you have had a surgical excision then yes. Your wound will be stitched and dressed. You must keep this clean and dry until the stitches are removed ( about 1 week later). Dissolvable stitches can take anywhere between 2 - 8 weeks to fully dissolve and heal.
  • What to expect after treatment?
You can bath or shower after 48 hours but do not put the wound directly under the flow of water and replace the dressing if required. If the dressings fall off, clean the wound and dab dry, do not rub, and reapply a clean dressing. Once the stitches have been removed apply Vaseline to the wound for the next 4 weeks. If at any point the wound becomes red, inflamed or is weeping, please contact the clinic or your GP if it has not been possible to reach us.
  • What to avoid after treatment?
Abstain from any strenuous exercise and pressure on the wound so as to not disrupt the stitches.
Avoid any excessive heat ie saunas until the stitches have been removed and you have been advised further. Do not pick any scabs or dry skin.
