What is a Keloid?

A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that forms after skin injury, surgery, or sometimes even minor irritation. Unlike normal scars, keloids extend beyond the original wound and often appear raised and firm.

How does the treatment work?

Treatment depends on the size, location and any previous attempts to manage the keloid.

For surgical removal, the surgeon numbs the area, using local anesthetic, excises the keloid, and closes the skin with sutures.

Steroid injections may be needed post removal to aid the healing process and prevent recurrence.

What to expect after treatment:

Recovery is usually straightforward. Most patients return to normal activities the day after surgery. Mild swelling, tenderness or redness may appear but usually settles within a few days.

 

When to expect results:

Most patients recover within a few days and can resume normal activities shortly after. Complete healing of the surgical site and scar maturation may take several weeks to months.
